German American Club
The Club's History

Lawton has a large number of residents who come from German-speaking countries. Also many of the soldiers assigned to nearby Fort Sill have served military tours in Germany. In addition, the German Air Force maintained a training detachment at Fort Sill until 1989. These varied contacts have caused a large interest in German activities among the people in Lawton, Oklahoma.

To meet the interest, a small group of German-speaking people joined together and formed the German American Club in 1972. Their aim was preserve the language, customs and traditions of German-speaking countries and to present them to their fellow Lawtonians.

Our club now numbers about 150 members. Our calendar includes a full schedule of dances featuring Polkas and Waltzes. We also offer dinners serving German food. Our membership includes the Edelweiss Dancers, who perform a program of traditional folk dances from Germany. They travel throughout the Texoma area for their performances. The G.A.C. of Lawton stages a traditional German Nativity play each year at Christmas. And each year we present Lawton's Oktoberfest.

In addition, we participate in local community activities such as Lawton's International Festival and Armed Forces Day Parade. We also schedule a full range of social events for our members. Today, our goal is to preserve and enjoy the customs and traditions of German-speaking countries. Membership is open to anyone who shares these goals.
